Located on unceded Menang Country, in Tenterden, WA.
Allington Family Farm produce Pasture Raised Eggs, Chicken, Berkshire Pork and Grass Fed & Finished Beef and Lamb using regenerative & sustainable farming practices.
Our farm is currently made up of our several properties. Our home farm, where we live and work, a beautiful 100 acres in Tenterden, near Mt Barker, WA. It is here that all of our pasture raised eggs, chickens and Berkshire pork are produced. We also lease another 350 acres in Darkan, where the majority of our grazing cattle and lambs live.
Our farming changed from a traditional model, to a ‘paddock to plate’ model, as we wanted to share our product with our wider community, rather than ‘lose it’ by selling it on to the open market. What started off as us simply farming sheep, soon became a much more diverse farm, producing more of a variety of food so that ultimately, we can feed more people!
We began selling to individual customers, before starting to supply local restaurants. We did this for a few years before COVID hit and all restaurants closed down practically overnight. We knew that if we wanted our business to survive, we needed to adapt; so we went back to selling our produce directly to the consumer.
Once the world opened up again, we were approached by a Farmers Market in Perth, who invited us to come along and sell our produce there - and the rest is history! We now attend seven different Farmers Markets on a Saturday and Sunday every weekend across Perth.
You can read more about the Farmers Markets that we attend here with information about locations and times.
Key Farming Practices
We have several farming practices that for us, are non-negotiable. Although some of these are not yet industry-wide, we are very passionate in ensuring that we do as much as we can to only give treatments which are 100% necessary, or that we are legally bound by.
All animals raised on spray-free, chemical-free pasture
Non-mulesing & ear-marking practices
Low-stress stock handling methods
Limited intervention in terms of animal health treatments across the farm; depending on species and requirements
No added hormones/antibiotics in any of our meat products
Regenerative farming practices (including rotational grazing) to improve our soil health and pasture growth and quality
All animals have free access to open paddocks all year round (with exceptions for necessary animal health care such as shearing and lamb marking)
No feed lotting ever
All animals are hand-selected, loaded and delivered to the abattoirs by us to ensure minimal stress. The animals are then harvested, cut up and we then package the meat ourselves to ensure quality and consistency.
We think it’s important to be transparent about our farming practices and would love you to get in contact if you would like any further information or are interested in either volunteering with us, or visiting us on the farm at some point. We also hold Open Farm Days, Volunteer Days and training days on the farm - keep an eye on our social media for updates!
